THE STORY
Home of the last mountain gorillas on the planet, the Congo Virunga National Park is the oldest National Park in
Africa. This part of the Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the most impoverished in the country. In order to
prevent the encroachment of the gorilla habitat and to contribute to the creation of job opportunities and
alternative sources of income for the local population, a cacao project was created in the vicinity of the Park in
2010 by the Eastern Congo Initiative (ECI). The farmers in Eastern Congo are trained to grow high-quality cocoa
and to participate in the development of a sustainable supply chain.
This cacao is grown in new cacao forests in the Watalinga area, a mountainous region along the Ugandan
border, where most of the farmers are based. With the premiums paid for this cacao, the Watalinga receive
additional income, as well as important healthcare services and preventative measures like bed nets and school
fees.

GENETICS

The variety of the cocoa trees in Uganda and D.R. Congo are a mixture of Forastero and Trinitario varieties.
